Shipping Stretch Film Rolls for Export: Packing and Loading Tips
Stretch film rolls are among the trickiest products to ship by sea: large-diameter, heavy, and sensitive to both mechanical damage and humidity. A single poorly strapped pallet can turn a clean order into a costly claim. This article breaks down how professional exporters pack, palletize, and container-load stretch film and BOPP packaging tape so that every roll arrives in the same condition it left the warehouse.
Why Stretch Film Rolls Are Different to Ship
Unlike rigid goods, a stretch film roll is a heavy cylinder (typically 15-40 kg per roll, 300-500 mm in diameter) with a narrow core that concentrates stress at the edges. Two failure modes dominate: edge crushing from lateral load, and moisture absorption that weakens the film and promotes tack transfer between layers. Because the product is also relatively low-value per cubic metre, it is easy to overlook packing discipline when the container is tight - and that is exactly when damage happens.
Packing the Individual Roll
1. Edge and core protection - each roll is wrapped in a moisture-resistant film or bag, with corrugated edge boards or plastic end caps fitted over the two cut faces to stop corner crushing during handling.
2. Strapping - a minimum of two steel or plastic straps across the diameter of every roll, positioned to take lateral load without pinching the film. Straps should be tensioned by hand or ratchet, never crimped onto the film surface.
3. Moisture barrier - a desiccant pack (100-250 g) and a vapour-barrier liner between rolls absorb the residual humidity that sea freight introduces, keeping the film tack-stable and free of surface condensation.
Palletizing and Building the Load
Rolls are packed in a stable brick pattern - typically two or three per layer, with a flat cardboard or dunnage sheet between each layer to spread weight and stop rolls from rolling against one another. The pallet is shrink-wrapped and corner-protected, and the top is kept below the standard container-internal clearance so the load does not ride up on the container wall during a shift. For mixed SKUs (stretch film plus packaging tape), separate pallets are built per product to keep customs and inventory records clean.
Container Loading and Securing
A full 20-foot container is loaded pallet-first, floor to ceiling, with the heaviest rolls toward the container doors and the door-side rows double-stacked only where the base layer is solid. Vertical V-blocks or wooden dunnage keep the roll pallets from sliding longitudinally on a rough sea, and lashing points on the top row take a tie-down strap to the container ring bolts. Leaving a small ventilation gap at the top of each row, rather than sealing it airtight, reduces the condensation build-up that otherwise shows up as water streaks on the film at destination.
Documentation, Standards, and Moisture Control
Good export practice also extends to the paperwork and the environment inside the container. Each pallet is labelled with the SKU, gauge, width, and batch number so the buyer can trace a claim back to a production run. Containers are loaded below 25°C with a temperature and humidity logger placed at the centre of the load, and the whole consignment is shipped against a packing list that matches the commercial invoice line-by-line - which is what keeps customs clearance fast and insurance claims simple.
What a Ready-Stock Supplier Adds
Most damage is really a stock-and-handling problem: orders cut from a large ready-stock warehouse are packed the same day they are booked, using dedicated edge boards and strapping trained to a single standard, rather than being rushed at container time. That is the difference between a supplier that treats export as an afterthought and one that has shipped stretch film to the same ports repeatedly.
